Problems burning DVD's at home? - 2002 sony home entertainment system with 5 disk cd changer

Somebody help me. I have recently bought a new computer. I use DVD Shrink DVD to ensure that I make a copy for the family members. Cheetah Can I burn DVDs. I have tried using Maxell DVD + R and DVD-R. The DVD + R, RW that I used to say them, but the DVD-R does not. I was told to treat them without RW, but it was better. I was also told to buy a better brand of discs. Everything that I burned on my work PC but not on my DVD player, I got Emerson in 2002 as a gift. I do not understand because I have some DVDs that were burned for me by a friend who works in my DVD player. The only difference is that they are Sony DVD + R-RW drive with them. Why?
